The story

Cover'I bought a Mountain' tells the story of how the author buys a sheep farm in the North Welsh mountains some years before the second world war, without having any previous experience in sheep farming. He marries a local girl and together they succeed in bringing the farm to prosperity.

For the largest part the book covers the day to day activities on and around the farm and the problems related to them. Also included in the book is the story of the author's record walk over Wales' fourteen peaks with a height of more than 3000 feet.

My opinion

CoverThe book gives a good picture of what life in the rough country of North Wales must have been like in the years before the war: the hard work, but also the sense of solidarity between the people.

In his style of writing the author has succeeded in keeping sufficient distance from his experiences to prevent the story from becoming melodramatic. Yet the distance is still kept small enough for the reader to be able to identify himself with the author in his day to day life. On the whole the style of narration is quite factual.

I have read this book with great pleasure.
