It was in October 1997 that I moved from The Netherlands to Scotland. From the rivers and the dikes to the hills and the castles; from the land of cows to the land of sheep; from the Dutch drizzle to the Scottish rain. And so far I have found little reason to regret it (well, except for the rain bit).

The river Tyne at East LintonFor the first half year or so I lived in Carmunnock, just outside the city of Glasgow. But then I took a job in Edinburgh and moved house to Newtongrange, a former mining village to the south-east of the Scottish capital.

The Scottish landscape is ideal for walking, whether you prefer an easy stroll or a strenuous hike through the mountains. Just outside Edinburgh lie the Pentland Hills, a relatively narrow range of hills with their highest peak at 579 meters. Despite the vicinity of a big city these hills offer ample opportunity for a quiet walk.
