Pentland
Hills |
 |
The Pentland
Hills are a narrow range of hills that runs from the Edinburgh city
limit for some twenty-five kilometers in south-westerly direction.
The highest peaks can be found near Edinburgh, with Scald Law rising
up to 579 meters.
|
Much
of the Pentland Hills is taken up by a country park. Though most of
the land is used for sheep farming, there is a public right of way on
all paths, like here on the slopes of Scald Law. |
|
In
the center and on the north-west edge of the hills lie a number of
drinkwater reservoirs, fed by the abundantly falling Scottish rain.
This is a view
towards Threipmuir Reservoir. |
|
On
the other side of the Pentland Hills the walker finds many
magnificent views across the Midlothian and (in the far distance)
East Lothian counties. |
|
Sheep
are grazing the grassy slopes of Castlelaw Hill. |
|
Many
small burns (the Scottish word for a stream) find their way through
these hills, like the West Water near the hamlet Garvald. |

gallery. And do you remember Wilson's cloud chamber from your
physics lessons at school? This Nobel
laureate was born in Glencorse, at the foot of the Pentland Hills.
When you are in
the neighbourhood, why not try this walk
through the northern part of the hills.
