How to get there |
Coming from the north-west over the B6355: approximately 8.5 km after Gifford the B6355 turns left, but you follow the road that goes straight ahead. This road eventually passes through Longformacus. Shortly after you enter the village the road broadens, which is a good place to leave your car.
Coming from the A6105: approximately 1 km east of Duns you leave the A6105 and turn north-west. This road eventually passes through Longformacus. Some 100 meters after the bridge over the Dye Water the road broadens, which is a good place to leave your car.
Route description |
The walk starts at the bridge over the Dye Water, where you turn into the road signposted for the Watch Water Reservoir. From here to Scarlaw Farm, almost halfway the walk, you will follow the trail of the Southern Upland Way.
For the first two kilometers the tarmac road follows the Dye Water and the Watch Water, before it veers away and starts to climb into the hills. It passes through the grounds of Rawburn Farm and then turns right, at which point the scenery changes as moorland replaces the cultivated farmlands on one side of the road. Soon you will see the Watch Water Reservoir lie in front of you.
Continue to follow the tarmac road, which curves around the reservoir and then enters the grounds of Scarlaw Farm. Once past the farm buildings the road becomes an easy to walk dirt track. Pass through a gate and follow the main track, which turns right to climb Scar Law. You are now walking through sheep country, so make sure that you do not disturb the livestock. Where the track crosses the ridge that links Scar Law to Dunside Hill there stands a small monument, marked J.O.H. 1994.
Continue to follow the track downhill to the Dye Water, where you pass through another gate. Cross the stream and follow the track as it bends left and ends on a tarmac road. (Here the map indicates a possible shortcut, a path along the Dye Water, from Dye Cottage back to Longformacus. In the terrain this path is however largely non-existant and in places provides you with difficult walking conditions.) Turn right onto the tarmac road, which climbs away from the stream and leaves the moorland behind. You now pass over the slopes of Black Hill, before descending to and crossing the Wester Burn. The next climb brings you to Horseupcleugh Farm, followed by a descend to another stream.
Once past this stream you start your final climb, up the slopes of Wrunk Law. Turn right on the T-junction with another tarmac road and enjoy the view across the Whiteadder Valley at your left. Once past Wrunk Law the road starts to descend and from here on the last three kilometers are an easy stroll downhill, back to Longformacus.
