Mandelbrot fractal

Logo

The Mandelbrot program puts the entire Mandelbrot fractal on the screen and then allows you to zoom in on any part of it (peculiarly enough I have never implemented a zoom out function). Beware, the program is calculation intensive and it requires a math co-processor if your computer uses a 486SX or lower processor.

The program is not self-installing, so you have to do some work yourself. Start by downloading the ZIP file containing the program to a temporary directory, say C:\temp. Next unzip the file into this directory and delete the original ZIP file. From here on the procedure becomes slightly operating system dependent.

Under DOS move the files mandel.exe and mandel.dat to a convenient directory, for instance C:\mandel.

Make sure that directory C:\mandel is included in the search path in your C:\autoexec.bat file.

Under a 16-bit Windows version (Windows 3.1, 3.11) move the files mandel.exe and mandel.dat to a convenient directory, for instance C:\mandel.

In the program manager create a new program (pointing to C:\mandel\mandel.exe) in an appropriate program group (for instance in group Fractals). Name this program something like Mandelbrot fractal.

Under a 32-bit Windows version (Windows 95, 98, NT) move the files mandel.exe and mandel.dat to a convenient directory, for instance C:\Program Files\Mandelbrot.

In the start menu create a new shortcut (pointing to C:\Program Files\Mandelbrot\mandel.exe) in an appropriate folder (for instance in folder Fractals). Name this shortcut something like Mandelbrot fractal.

Operation of the program is self-explaining. Use the left mouse key to select the part of the Mandelbrot fractal to enlarge. While a new screen image is being built up you can use the right mouse key to go back to the previous image. The Escape key exits the program.

Honor where honor is due. These days there are better programs than this one to explore the Mandelbrot fractal. Fractal Harmonies for instance is a program that does not only let you zoom in on the fractal, but it even generates music from it.
