Vroom   I have received some complaints about search software that installs itself when visiting www.vroomsearch.com. Please note that this site has nothing to do with the Vroom search facility described here. You will have to direct queries and complaints to the offending site's owners. To add a search facility to a web site on my own computer, I needed a search engine that could work without requiring a server of some kind. I did come across two freeware solutions, but wasn't quite happy with their performance. That was the start point for the development of Vroom, a JavaScript-based client-side search engine. If you have a similar requirement, feel free to download the Vroom software from this page. Check here for the general conditions of use for my software. Vroom consists of three parts: an indexer that analyses the web site and builds a database of keywords and their occurrence; a search engine that performs search and report operations; and example HTML pages that show how to implement the search engine in the site. Actually, the indexer part of Vroom is not much more than a shell around the indexer that comes with WrenSoft's freeware search engine Zoom (my thanks for this useful program, it saved me quite a bit of development work). To be able to use Vroom you also need to download the Zoom software from the WrenSoft web site. The JavaScript search engine has been tried out and works well with the Internet Explorer, Netscape Navigator and Opera browsers. There is no installation program, because the Vroom software has to be placed within the web site that uses it. Just download the ZIP file to a temporary directory and unzip it.
