'The
Music in the Numbers' is a program to generate music that can be
described as an audible fractal. It uses a very simple algorithm, but
with that algorithm is able to create some interesting tunes.
'Fractal
Harmonies' also generates music, but this program uses
Mandelbrot's fractal as a starting point. It is an easy to use
program that does not require a lot of user interaction to generate
quite nice sounding pieces.
'POV-Ray'
is a ray-tracing program. Ray-tracers create images of a virtual
world, described in terms of geometrical figures. They do so by
tracing back the paths of all light rays that make up an image.
'IrfanView'
is an image viewer with many possibilities, supporting a wide range
of image formats. Features that I particularly like are the batch
conversion between graphic formats and the support of dynamic GIF images.
'Programmer's
File Editor' is a plain text editor, but one with a lot of
options. It is particularly useful for writing programs or control
files, as it has auto lay-out features and supports the launch of
external compilers or interpreters. I have used it for instance in
conjunction with the DOS version of the 'POV-Ray'
program. Alas the program is no longer supported by its author.
'WXTide32'
is a tide calculator that produces tide tables or tide graphs for
many places around the world. The correctness of the tidal data has
not been verified by an authorizing agency, so you don't want to use
it for life or death decisions. But the program is ideal when you
want to go for that coastal walk and need to know when to expect the
next low or high tide.
'Ghostscript'
and its graphical interface 'GSview'
make an easy to use tool to view both Postscript and PDF documents
and to convert between the two formats. |
