The Music in the Numbers

Logo

Fractals are an intriguing branch of mathematics, widely appreciated for the nice graphic images they can produce. But one day I ran into this piece of software that uses a fractal approach to generate music.

Playing around I initially managed to produce a number of quite boring melodies, but before very long the tunes became more interesting. And I became intrigued by the wide variety of melodies that can be generated with what is basically a very simple algorithm.

Listen to some of the tunes below. And if you are interested, pay a visit to the MusiNum web site. The program is freeware and it can be downloaded from there. You will also find some background on the mathematics behind the software.

If you like to have some examples to start working from, feel free to download the source files for the tunes below.
