I like to go
for a walk along the coast every now and then, so I could use a tide
calculator. Not really expecting to readily find such a program in
the public domain, it nevertheless took not more than fifteen minutes
on the world-wide web before I came across WXTide32.
|
WXTide32
is a tide calculator without a lot of bells and whistles, but it
does exactly what it should do. It tells you the expected sea levels
for more than 9,500 places in the world.
The output is
either in the form of a graph or as a text table in one of three
formats. And as a bonus the program also gives you the rise and set
times for the sun and moon.
The correctness
of the tidal data has not been verified by an authorizing agency, so
you don't want to use it for life or death decisions. But I find it
more than accurate enough to plan my walks with. If you want to give
it a try, visit the WXTide32 web site
from where the program can be downloaded. It is freeware, so what
stops you...
If you are a
Palm user and want to know the tides even when you are far away from
your PC at home, check out Tidetool,
a similar freeware program for the Palm and
based on the same harmonic tide information as used by WXTide32. |
The
United Kingdom Hydrographic Office
have taken the stance that they want to see money for the use of UK
tidal information. (In an attempt to boost the sales of their own
tidal prediction program TotalTide?) This affects WXTide32, TideTool
and other free tidal prediction services, which now no longer support
UK data. My appreciation of the UK government has dropped a few points...
